Provenance Research in Museums: Call for Papers by ICOM

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) invites you to contribute to Museum International Vol. 77 Nº 307-308, focusing on "Provenance Research in Museums: Principles, Practices, and Possibilities."

This special issue seeks to expand the conversation on provenance research beyond tracing ownership to exploring the rich, complex histories of objects and their acquisition contexts.

ICOM encourages submissions highlighting innovative methodologies, collaborative efforts with diaspora and descendant communities, and critical examinations of collecting practices, especially those shaped by colonial histories. It interprets ‘objects’ and ‘collections’ in a broad sense to refer to both cultural and natural history collections as a way of challenging the existing binary division between nature and culture in museums.

Submit your abstract (250–300 words) by 20 January 2025 to publications@icom.museum. Accepted proposals will undergo a rigorous peer review, with publication expected in late 2025.
